Get In Line (2024)
This ten song effort finds Brent returning to the approach to recording that made his debut album Head for the Highground such a compelling statement; no drums, and tracking vocals and guitar together for a more authentic, emotive delivery.
The writing, always a hallmark of Mason’s work, remains strong and on point. It’s what you would expect, and more, from “the David Adams Richards of NB songwriters”, buttressed by beautifully complimentary playing and production.
*SUGGESTED TRACKS:
Get In Line
We’ve Got Love
only Passing Through
Fireflies (2020)
A collection of 10 songs, ‘Fireflies’, my latest album takes risks, trying new approaches to vocal presentation, guitar playing and new genres. You’ll find sweet gentle folk tunes, country’n’ blues, some forays into heavy rock and even some swampy reggae-tinged rhythms around his words.
*SUGGESTED TRACKS:
Frogs in a Pot
Monticello
Cold Love
Brent Mason’s eleventh album, “Fireflies,” is full of twists and turns, delights and surprises. Plainspoken lyrics reminisce and ponder days long gone, loves long lost and what it means to move on, if that is even still possible.
- Douglas McLean, Great Dark Wonder
High Water Mark (2017)
My first record with no song over 5 minutes! Reggae, rock, country, folk all manage to coexist in some form on this album!
- Music NB Nomination Folk Artist of the Year
*SUGGESTED TRACKS:
The Other Side of Blue
Where Your Love Lives
"From the bouncy opening track “Where Your Love Lives” through the reflective “The Other Side Of Blue,” to bluesy undertones of “Can’t Quit You,” and shades of Tom Petty that abound in “Get It While You Can,” Mason’s latest record brims with a confidence that can only be attained after a tenure such as his."
- Ken Kelly, Telegraph Journal
All the Pretty Horses (2014)
Totally stole the title from Cormac McCarthy. My friend, the quite amazing Grant Heckman, stepped in to produce this record - his contributions shape it beautifully. This is the first album I recorded a cover song - a John Hartford tune, “Gentle on my Mind”.
- Music NB 2015 Nomination SOCAN Song of the Year
(When Jesus Met Whiskey)
- Music NB 2015 Nomination Folk/Roots Album of the Year
- Music NB 2015 Nomination Solo Artist of the Year
*SUGGESTED TRACKS:
When Jesus Met Whiskey
All The Pretty Horses
Old New Borrowed Blue (2011)
Recording in Saint John became a possibility when I met Tim Davidson, a brilliant, wonderful producer and musician. This album was a new sound for my music.
- Music NB Award Folk/Roots Album of the Year
*SUGGESTED TRACKS:
Gretzky And Me
Running Out The Clock
Both Kinds of Music (2008)
This is the last record I recorded with my good friend Lloyd Hanson, someone who defined the sound of my music on record. It was a great run and this one came off really smoothly. I had done my first TV show during this (Grave Concerns) and wrote Wide Awake for Jack.
*SUGGESTED TRACKS:
Wide Awake And Dreaming
Calvary (9th Ward Blues)
Gloryland (2005)
I got the title from an old sign along the river road, and it seemed to coalesce into a coherent body of songs. Jessica Rhaye did me a great honour in recording Ice Flow on her album Far Gone Lullabies.
*SUGGESTED TRACKS:
Tumbleweed
Ice Flow
Down Time
Hitcher on the Road (2003)
This is a more stylistically diverse record...some horns in there too!
*SUGGESTED TRACKS:
Hitcher On The Road
Las Brisas
River Songs (2000)
This one is my ode to the beautiful Wolastuq River (aka the St. John River). I had fallen in love with the river since coming home. I wrote a song a week for 16 weeks. I’m really glad I did this one.
- ECMA Nomination Folk/Roots album of the Year
*SUGGESTED TRACKS:
Evandale Ferry 2 Step
Words From The Water
Stoney Plain (1997)
A bigger collective sound here, with drums, and more electricity.
*SUGGESTED TRACKS:
Stony Plain
Brave New World
Down to Heaven (1995)
This record is more atmospheric and a moodier effort all around.
*SUGGESTED TRACKS:
Matter Over Mind
Song For Marc Lepine
High Ground (1992)
The first batch of songs came about after some years running down the elusive dust trail of Kerouac. I was unprepared for how much attention it got. It still sounds fresh to me.
*SUGGESTED TRACKS:
Head For The high Ground
Thought And Deed
